There are many misconceptions surrounding Mont Blanc. People say that it is a walk in the park, that it is over-crowded, that it’s a boring slog. The truth is Mont Blanc, Western Europe’s highest peak, is none of these. It’s what you make it.
If you want “no people”, you can climb mid-week at the beginning of the climbing season (or in winter if you want real solitude). If you want something more than the “Ordinary” route (which is far from ordinary), there are many routes, accessible to non-mountaineers, which are rarely mentioned. You can do the Mont Blanc on skis, a traverse of the summit over two other 4000m peaks (Mt Blanc du Tacul, Mt Maudit) or ascend the Pope’s route from Italy and descend into France, the options are endless.
