There are literally hundreds of cross country skiing events all over Europe, some with 10,000 people, others with only a few hundred. All are a challenge.
L'Etoile des Saisies, in the Savoie Alps is the fourth and final stage of the Grand Prix de Ski de Fond Longue Distance - comprising la Foulée Blanche (21 Jan), la Transjurassienne (10-11 Feb) and the Transpyrénèenne (18 Mar).
L'Etoile is still a relatively small event. You have a choice of distances, 42km, 21km or 10km. The track runs over the 1992 Winter Olympic course and the scenery is mind blowing with views on the Mt Blanc - essential for taking your mind off one of the most substantial challenges in the mountains.
This event is for the determined beginner as well as the more experienced skier. You come, less for the accomplishment of completing the course but more to take part in an extraordinary experience, begun shoulder to shoulder with hundreds of other skiers heading off into winter wilderness.
